Vaginoplasty

Home Gynecology Vaginoplasty

OVERVIEW

With childbirth and aging, some women lose tone in their vagina, the perineal muscles can relax and the genital opening may become too wide. So women opt for Vaginoplasty surgery that reduces the diameter of their vagina. This technique tightens up the inside of the vagina, and strengthens the muscles of the perineum.

The ideal candidates for this type of procedure are women who suffer from urinary incontinence or organ descent also known as Pelvic Organ Prolapse. Vaginoplasty is recommended to women whose vaginal muscles have loosened following childbirth, aging of the tissues or poor muscle quality. In fact, the vagina enlargement amplifies the perineum weakness since this latter maintains the genital organs. This surgery is recommended for women who experience physical discomfort, emotional insecurity, discontent and even pain during intercourse and a feeling of loss of femininity.

HOW VAGINOPLASTY IS PERFORMED

There are two types of proceduresVaginoplasty and laser vaginoplasty; they are both usually performed under general or local anesthesia as appropriate, and usually last one hour. The Vaginoplasty technique is recommended for patients with significant laxity to the point that a tampon falls out, or for those who suffer from urination incontinence.

The procedure involves three phases, and each aims for different goals. To tighten the muscles of the perineum, the surgeon will strengthen the perineum tissue located between the vagina and the anus. And then, will practice an incision at the posterior floor of the vaginal canal, bring them closer and suture them together with dissolvable stitches to reconstitute the muscular strap. After that, in order to tighten the entrance of the vagina, the surgeon will close the vagina at the bottom to have a narrower opening. Finally, to rejuvenate the vagina and improve its sensitivity, the surgeon will practice lipofilling or lipomodelling by removing fat, and injecting it on the vagina or labia majora.

The second method called as laser Vaginoplasty, is also known as vaginal laser. It is a noninvasive alternative of vaginal tightening through heating tissues with radiofrequency waves or laser. This surgery is recommended for women who have color change on their vagina and have dark skin in this area. It can be performed with Vagina tightening procedure.

DURING/AFTER SURGERY

The postoperative effects of a Vaginoplasty are usually painless, but to reduce immediate postoperative discomfort, simple analgesics are prescribed. The day after the surgery, the patient can take a shower with clear water and wash with a mild hypoallergenic soap. They can resume their activities after 5 to 6 days following the surgery, whereas, sex and sports can only be resumed after one month. The recovery period takes ten days including two weeks without a tampon. Regarding the results on the sexual life, they can be appreciated 3 months after the procedure.
